Submission Guidelines

Submissions for Issue 3 are now CLOSED

The theme for Issue 03 is identity. We want life, both real and imagined. We want bar/bat mitzvahs. First pride parades. Hometowns and found cities. Middle school nicknames. We want moments of self-love and self-hatred. We want the talks you had with with your parents, whether it’s “the birds and the bees” or “the cops and the cruelty”. For this issue, we want you to be unapologetic in your skin, your love, your gender, your YOU. You have a story, and we want to hear it.

UPDATE (MARCH 2015): Transcendence is now accepting submissions through Green Submissions. To submit to Transcendence, follow this link

In sending us your work, you verify that the pieces submitted are your own property and/or you hold the copyright, and that those pieces have not been published elsewhere, either in print or online, except your personal websites or blogs (this includes Tumblr, WordPress, and similar sites) and will be taken down upon publication. You give permission to Transcendence Magazine to distribute your work as a part of the issue for which it was accepted, and to use your name (or pseudonym, if it is different from your legal name) and the title of the work you have published with us for promotional material. Should your published submission be selected as a featured piece, we will ask if we may archive it on the website along with editors' and readers' praises of the piece. You also give Transcendence Magazine First North American Serial Rights. This means that you will let us be the first place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada to publish this particular work in this particular form. For more information on FNASR and other rights, please see this.

We only accept work that is in English.

We cannot accept files shared directly from clouds like Google Drive or Dropbox for text (prose and poetry) submissions, and we will only accept them from these sharing services in extenuating circumstances for image (art) submissions sent through email. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Please save files to your computer and upload them as attachments, or copy and paste the images into the body of the email.

Poetry and Prose

Send 1-5 pieces through Green Submissions. Please make sure your submission is in a doc or docx format; other file types like pdf and jpg are not accepted for literature submissions. Include a cover letter with a bio of no more than 150 words.

Poetry submissions do not have a line or length limit. Please keep prose submissions to 5,000 words or less.

Do not put your name or other identifying information in the documents. We prefer to review submissions blindly.

Please use a simple, readable font. We recommend Times New Roman 12pt.

We do not accept previously published work. We will publish work that has been posted to your personal blog provided that it is taken down from your blog upon acceptance.

Art and Photography Submissions

Please send no more than 5 pieces of art or photographs. These art pieces must be your own creation, or you must have written, signed permission from the owner/creator. Please attach these files to an email and send to transcendencemag [at] gmail [dot] com, or you may send them to us through Green Submissions. Image formats like .jpg and .png are preferred. Please query first if you cannot attach files and wish to share them from a cloud service like Google Drive or Dropbox instead.

Unfortunately, we cannot accept videos or gifs. Please only send photographs and drawings/paintings.

IMPORTANT: If your photograph shows the likeness of another person, please make sure you have their permission to submit it to us. Written permission is preferable. If you are in the photograph and you are younger than 18 years old, please have your parents' permission to potentially let us publish it; again, written permission is preferable. Do not send nude photographs.
